Oberlin Rocks presents Yellow Ball Tennis Camp

The Shipherd/Stewart memorial is painted for a tennis camp which holds some sessions on the Oberlin College campus. Photo taken June 25, 2008. The long white rectangle at the bottom of the rock is paint -40 years of paint accumulation!- which had dislodged from the base. It was about two inches thick, thirty-five inches long, and weighed about fifteen pounds.

How cool is that? I can’t wait to do the Yellow Ball Tennis Camp rock painting ceremony this year.
It reminds me of the Native American-themed day camp in Santa Barbara California – Camp Lore – where my mom was a counselor in the 50s, then later my brother and I both were campers, and eventually I was a “Leader in Training” in the 70s.
Ahh, the lost art of rock painting.

Rocking-painting thursdays were my favorite nights at Yellowball tennis camp. My favorite mornings were those Fridays when some other camp hadn’t already painted over our breathtakingly beautiful Yellowball rock!

Rock painting – by far the best (and most covert) activity of any Yellow Ball Tennis Camp week! And soon enough, it’ll happen again!
