This is the Class of 1882 rock, photo taken March 22, 2007.

The Class of 1898 monument is painted in an artistic way in the summer of 2008. Photos taken August 14, 2008.

Angèle Peterson sent in this photo of the rock painted for her sister Stephanie Peterson McMillan’s 21st birthday. Both women were born and raised in Oberlin. The rock was painted on July 26, 1983 as a surprise for Stephanie and photographed on July 27, 1983.

Thanks, Angèle, for sharing this memory.

This photo of Sponge Bob Square Pants on the Shipherd/Stewart memorial was taken and submitted by Paul Morton, associate editor of the Oberlin News-Tribune in April, 2004, for a newspaper feature called “12 months of Rock,” which appeared in January 2005. The newspaper took pictures of the rocks on Tappan Square each month of 2004 and published them in the feature.
Thanks for the photo, Paul.

This photo of the Shipherd/Stewart memorial was taken July 5, 2008. I think cloudscapes are gorgeous and have been a member of the Cloud Appreciation Society for over two years.

Eva Greenberg writes: “Here is the article and picture about the “Oberlin boulder” which appeared in the Chronicle-Telegram on May 22, 1983. Since the article itself does not make any reference to what is written on the rock, let me explain.
The rock was painted in August of 1982, a few days before my daughter, Judy, was married to “Mikey” or more officially, Michael Larkin.
“Welcome back Henk” refers to the fact that our AFS student, Hendrik van’t Hull, who spent the year 1971-1972 with us, came back and surprised us when he showed up unannounced for Judy’s wedding.
“Happy Birthday Goethe” was something the rock painter threw in as August 28 also happened to be the birthday of the German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.”
Thank-you, Eva, for sending in the newspaper clipping and explanation. So far, it is the earliest photo, 1982, that is on the website.

Katie Laushman writes “this was for my friend Keri when we were in ninth grade. I believe we were in a Beatles mode at the time, so my friends and I decided to give it a Beatles’ Birthday
twist. I don’t actually remember who all I painted it with, but it was in February of 2005,
probably around the 8th”.
Thanks to you Katie, for sending in this story and photo.

This photo of the Stewart/Shipherd memorial was taken August, 16, 2008. The rock was painted by Ann Longsworth Orr and her two children on the way from Ohio to North Carolina where the extended family gathered for a celebration of the fiftieth wedding anniversary (August 16, 1958) of her parents, Bob and Carol Longsworth.
