Hulk
This photo of the Shipherd/Stewart memorial was taken July 2, 2008. The Incredible Hulk was playing at the Apollo Movie Theater that week. Is the rock painting related to the movie?

Kurt Vonnegut memorial
This photo is of the Shipherd/Stewart memorial. It was taken in mid-April of 2007. See www.vonnegut.com for more information and artwork. Hopefully someone has a better photo of this rock painting and will send it to us.

This is the ‘98 class rock, photographed on March 22, 2007. Mike Lianos’ Mom, we hope you had a good visit in Oberlin!

Pete and Rebecca (unknown to us) were married on July 5, 2008. This photo was taken on July 5, 2008. The rock is the class of 1882 monument located on North Professor Street.

This excellent rendition of Pablo Picasso’s “The Old Guitarist” c. 1903 is another offering by the Oberlin High School Art Club. The Art Club has painted the rocks many times over the years.

Update: 3/5/09 Katie Laushman sent in this view of the painting with some background: “Attached is a picture of the rock I painted with Stevie T. on May 29, 2008. We were seniors at Oberlin High School, and members of the OHS Art Club. Art Club used to always paint the rock, but in my four years, we never had, and so as a senior, and art club president, I decided we should finally do it. I picked Picasso’s Old Guitarist because it’s recognizable as a famous painting, and not extremely hard to do. Stevie and I were the only ones who ended up painting it after school, and we did it with acrylic paint. “

And on the back of the Picasso rock:

A white squirrel was also out on Tappan Square that day.

The Shipherd/Stewart memorial rock is painted for the Oberlin High School Indians, class of 1972, which is my graduating class.;)This photo was taken in early summer of 2007. The Oberlin High School team’s name is now the Phoenix, changed from the Indians.

*Barbara Bukovac Landsman celebrates her 65th birthday on May 14, 2007 at the Rock, painted by her younger sisters Laura and Katrina, and her niece Annie. The Oberlin native returns to town annually in May to visit family and attend a standing lunch date for OHS class of ‘60. The Miami University grad worked in Washington DC teaching 4th, 5th grades, then writing for a trade magazine before moving with her family to California in 1976, where she worked in real estate, lending, and as an appraiser prior to retirement. Her comments: “Oberlin is such a special place to live. I always check the Rocks to see if someone I know is highlighted. I enjoy the Big Parade when I am there; it is priceless Americana.”
